Muscle loss with age happens quietly — a few percent a year, easy to miss until stairs feel harder or a jar lid won’t budge. Researchers have a name for the more advanced form: sarcopenia. Here’s what’s actually going on.
The numbers behind it
Studies on aging muscle estimate adults can lose roughly 3–8% of muscle mass per decade after age 30, with the pace picking up after 60. It isn’t just about strength — muscle tissue is also one of the body’s largest consumers of glucose, so losing it affects metabolism, not just mobility.
Why it happens
Several factors compound with age: less physical activity, changes in hormone levels, lower protein intake in many older adults’ diets, and a reduced ability to convert dietary protein into muscle (sometimes called anabolic resistance). None of these are inevitable death sentences — they’re targets researchers have found respond to intervention.
What the evidence supports
- Resistance training — even two sessions a week — is the single most consistently supported intervention for preserving muscle mass with age.
- Adequate protein, spread across meals rather than concentrated at dinner, appears to help older adults use dietary protein more effectively.
- Staying active in general — walking, carrying groceries, gardening — helps maintain the everyday strength that formal exercise alone doesn’t always cover.
Muscle loss is one of the more modifiable aspects of aging according to current research, but starting a new exercise routine after a long break, or with an existing health condition, is worth discussing with a doctor first — particularly for anyone with joint issues, heart conditions, or balance concerns.
